A Kaleidoscope of Love

Holly Robertson and Matthew Aitken transformed their dream into reality, blending modern romance with nostalgic touches that paid homage to their families. From dazzling decor to heartfelt moments, Holly shares their unforgettable day.

We were on holiday in Dubai, dining at Pier Chic with the Burj al Arab glittering in the background, when he surprised me with a yellow diamond ring from Finnies the Jeweller, something I’d been not-so-subtly hinting at!.

As soon as we got engaged I jumped into planning. I’m a self-confessed control freak, so decided to handle everything myself. It was a lot but I loved it. I’d had a bit of a head start, having helped my sister-in-law plan her wedding the year before. My top priorities were booking our venue and photographer.

Drumtochty Castle stole my heart long before we even visited. I wanted that traditional Scottish castle feel but it was important Matthew loved it too. When we walked in he was just as smitten as me. It had everything – exclusivity, grandeur and plenty of space for our loved ones to stay the whole weekend.

Our theme was an explosion of colour. The main shades were blue and pink but really, I wanted as much vibrancy as possible. Natalie from Dahlia Rose filled the space with bold, romantic blooms while quirky details (like a neon-lit retro photo corner, a vintage rug aisle runner and a claw-foot bathtub filled with prosecco!) kept the atmosphere playful. I even got an old phone for our audio guest book and filled a bookshelf with old family wedding photos.

When it came to my dress, I thought I’d chosen ‘The One’. Then Connie at Perfect Bridal pulled out a wild card. It was a one-shoulder, fully beaded Pronovias dress with a stunning floral appliqué and the moment I saw it, I knew. It felt like something Carrie Bradshaw would wear.

My reception dress was more personal – Martine Blair helped me reconstruct my late mum’s wedding gown. It was so special and let me dance until the wee hours in comfort, surrounded by love and history.

The night before, we kept things low-key with snacks, Champagne, and lots of laughs. And we both stayed at Drumtochty but in separate wings.

The morning was unexpectedly serene. We were spoiled rotten by the Drumtochty crew! There was never a moment without pastries or Champagne. The energy from our beauty team was so calming and everything ran like clockwork.

The humanist ceremony was emotional and deeply personal. Matthew lit a candle that stayed burning in memory of my mum, which meant everything to me. And his nephew Harris, who’s only ten, read a poem that had everyone in tears. It was beautiful.

Afterwards, the sun came out. Guests sipped prosecco and enjoyed Lolly’s ice cream; each flavour named after a member of the bridal party. The celebration then seamlessly moved indoors, where speeches were given and our saxophonist had everyone up before dessert was finished!

For our first dance, we chose Billie Eilish’s Ocean Eyes. Matthew’s always loved that song and having my bridesmaid Lauren, a trained musical theatre singer, perform it live was absolutely unforgettable. The Limit took over from there, transitioning from band to DJ. They kept the energy high all night, and their ‘80s medleys were a massive hit.

The whole day was a whirlwind of love and laughter. I’ll never forget the feeling of changing into my mum’s dress and dancing late into the night. My advice? Plan early and don’t worry too much about trends. Make it a reflection of who you are. Trends fade but your story and love never do.
