A virtual ceremony
Wondering how to show some love to those no longer invited to your wedding? Invite them to a virtual ceremony! Here’s how Amber ended up live streaming her and Andrew’s “I do”s…
“We got engaged on my 28th birthday at Haddo House after being together for six years. Within a few weeks we’d booked Maryculter House (it’s always been a firm favourite of ours) for 18th April 2020.
Planning went as it usually would until February/March time but as COVID-19 cases began to rise, we accepted our wedding would be cancelled. It actually got to the point we hoped it would be as we didn’t want friends and family to feel they had to risk themselves by coming.
After the lockdown announcement, we spoke to suppliers and I can’t fault a single one of them – so flexible, accommodating and supportive at this stage.
Like everyone else, we assumed the pandemic would be a distant memory by the end of the year so we asked about availability and saw Friday 13th November was available at Maryculter. Neither of us are even slightly superstitious so we went for it. Everyone we originally booked was free then too, so what could go wrong?
Time went on, though, and it became clearer the wedding we’d planned wouldn’t be happening. But it didn’t put us off getting married.
We’ve sadly lost a lot of family members in the two years since we got engaged and this put into perspective how much we wanted to tie the knot with our close family around us. Luckily the limit of 20 guests fitted our direct family almost perfectly.
We still wanted the other 120 guests to feel like part of our day, though, and ended up doing a live stream of the wedding ceremony for our family and friends to watch. We had so much positive feedback – everyone loved it and said it really made them feel like they were there! It’s been great for us to watch back, too, as there’s so much we didn’t notice at the time.
We’ve decided to have a first anniversary celebration in 2021 so we can have the evening reception we originally planned, and our guests can have something else to look forward to.
